Are you interested in exploring how language actually works? Do accents really make a difference? Have you ever wondered how a baby learns to talk? Do men and women really talk differently because of their gender? On this English Language A Level course, you’ll explore these questions, analyse texts, develop your opinions on linguistic topics and write your own articles.

English Language gets you thinking about the choices every author and every speaker makes about the language they use every day to appeal to their audience and to fit their genre and purpose. You’ll study a wide range of texts from web pages and forums to speeches, adverts and articles; and you’ll earn how to analyse them.

You’ll also have the chance to investigate and evaluate English, looking at wide-ranging topics like gender, accent, child language acquisition and language change, and using current research and linguistic theories to discuss and explore the issues.

During the two years, you will study language in many forms: both fiction and non-fiction; old and new; learning how to analyse and comment on them and creating texts of your own to match an audience. You will also consider the context of pieces, both historical and social, found within the language.

During your first year, you will study interesting language topics such as language and gender, language and occupation, and language and age. You will be looking at idiolects, sociolects, dialects and accents and how the search for identity shapes the way we speak. Then you will begin to consider how other factors like society, work and prejudice can all play a part to shape our language.

In your second year, you will study texts across time and how the English Language has developed, and in addition, how children acquire language. For example, is it innate, or must we as adults help guide and nurture children? You will also do your own language investigation, analysing your chosen topic in detail and creating an original piece of writing either to inform, persuade or tell a story – the choice is yours.

Students enjoy the variety of this course and the opportunity to explore their own writing interests. This is a course which appeals to students who are interested in contemporary ideas about how our language works. English Language is a subject which complements many other A Level subjects as it will improve your skills in analysing texts, communicating ideas and expressing your point of view, so it sits well with subjects like literature, sociology, psychology, law, politics, media, classics and history.

If you’re an avid reader, and a lover of literature, this highly-regarded study programme is a natural choice for you. You’ll read and examine a real variety of writing from different periods and genres, building on the analytical skills you’ve acquired at GCSE level.

The course texts can vary, but currently include such great titles as ‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Selected Poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ and a collection of poetry on the theme of love through the ages. On this A Level English Literature course, you will also learn how to analyse unseen texts and how to apply your skills in comparison to a wide variety of texts.

In the second year, you will be encouraged to follow your own interests in coursework through the comparison of two texts. You will also go on to study a further range of texts such as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ by Margaret Atwood, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ by Tennessee Williams and another collection of poetry.

Why did you choose to come to Petroc?
½ûÂþÌìÌÃis close to where I live so it was easy to walk to – and also it’s a really nice college!

What made you choose your course?
I chose my course mainly because I wanted to continue to study the sciences that I learnt at GCSE.

What did you most enjoy about studying at Petroc?
The staff are really good and attentive. I also did two Academies – VETMED and Environmental Sustainability – which were really good and a great addition to my studies as they linked to the scenes that I was doing. I particularly enjoyed a trip to Lundy where we explored the island, saw puffins, and spoke to rangers about how they run the island.

What are your future plans?
I am heading to Swansea to study Zoology. I have always wanted to study animal or plant science. At first I thought about becoming a vet but zoology fitted more with the courses I wanted to study. I then hope to move into research and do a doctorate or work in the industry studying wildlife.

Do you have any advice for someone choosing the same course as you?
Find what works for you and make the most of your time as it goes really quickly!

What made you decide to study for your GCSEs?
My daughter was about to begin studying for her GCSE’s and it had me thinking about not having any GCSE qualifications myself. As I had schooled in New Zealand, I didn’t obtain the equivalent. It was then an opportunity came up so I thought, why not?!

What have you most enjoyed about the course?
As an adult learner coming back into education for the first time in 36 years, I was very much looking forward to connecting with other like minded students.
Although I felt as though I was starting back at square one with regards to English Language, I enjoyed how our tutor Rita, challenged me.
Rita along with the course content, pushed me out of my comfort zone at times as well as highlighted areas I needed to work more on l. This made me even more determined to succeed.

How has gaining your GCSEs helped you in the future?
Nowadays when looking through potential job applications, I can see that 99% of vacancies ask for a GCSE in English and/or Maths at a bare minimum. Although I didn’t do this course to further my working career, I can proudly say that it’s a qualification that I didn’t have 1 year ago.

Any advice for someone thinking of choosing the same course as you?
If it’s a thought, then follow through and make it happen! If nothing else you will gain some enjoyment out of it.
